A Sports Guide to Gibraltar The management of sporting policies is overseen by the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority, which superseded the Sports Department in 2005. Gibraltar has its own Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council which was set in place to help to offer advice to the Gibraltar government about all sporting events and teams. Gibraltar has always recognised the benefit that can be gained from participating in the various sporting activities and they give a great deal of importance to making sure that appropriate practice and playing facilities are available for the team members of both school age, as well as professional players of Gibraltar sports. ![]() Both residents of Gibraltar, as well as visitors and tourists to the Rock enjoy sporting events, and may participate in local, as well as international sporting events. Gibraltar recognized 18 sports associations currently, with several others, including the Gibraltarian National Olympic committee being considered for entry after submitting application. The most common venue for sporting events in Gibraltar is the Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro, but training for both local teams as well as visitors who wish warm weather training quite often takes place in what is known as the Devils Tower Camp. Gibraltar residents are quite accomplished as dart players, and enjoy the sport immensely. Gibraltar Darts Association has established a Darts league which is a member of the World Darts Federation (WDF) and very often takes part in the European & World Championships. The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) has a yearly tournament in Gibraltar. Rugby too enjoys a wide popularity, and there are many local teams, although Gibraltar has not yet fielded a national team for Rugby play, they have given wonderful performances in the rugby sevens tournaments. Gibraltars International Cricket currently represent Gibraltar in international cricket matches. The Gibraltar Cricket team are members of the International Cricket Council and the European Cricket Council. Gibraltar is also represented by an International Football Team of Gibraltar, which is listed as one of the oldest football associations in the world. Though not inordinately successful at first Gibraltar's football team has come a very long way toward being recognized as a survivor and a winner. The Gibraltar football association has not yet become a member of the UEFA, although they have placed application. Spain is the strongest opponent to the Placement of Gibraltar on the UEFA, even offering threats to boycott any matches that Gibraltar team may compete in. Not until that UEFA membership is awarded may the Gibraltar national football team play in the Football Word and the European Football Championship events. |
